STANSTED AIRPORT: Airport introduces cracker ban

11:08am Tuesday 18th December 2007

PASSENGERS flying from Stansted Airport over Christmas are banned from carrying crackers on planes because of security fears.

A BAA spokesman confirmed the airport operator had banned crackers from hand luggage because the extra security required could lead to delays.

He said: "We won't allow them in hand luggage, we would have to open up the crackers and that removes the point of them. Some of them contain penknives and small amounts of liquid which we would also have to check.

"This is a lot of extra time and work for security, who are already very busy."

Staff say crackers are already regularly being confiscated from passengers and that loud bangs produced by the crackers could upset other passengers, or set off alarms on planes.

The spokesman said: "We're trying to get the message out and ask people not to bring them along if they're flying over Christmas."
