STORTFORD boss Martin Hayes may be tempted to make a move for former club captain Dave Rainford after the midfielder made a sudden exit from League Two outfit Dagenham and Redbridge.

The midfielder, who was a fans' favourite at Woodside Park, left the Daggers today to focus on his career as a teacher but he was quick to state that he has "a lot more to offer football."

After taking the senior post at Barking Abbey School, Rainford, 29, said: "I've still got a lot to give football but I must look ahead and think of the future too.

"A return to part time football will suit both my family and I."

The news will no doubt alert Hayes, who only last week insisted the club had "never replaced Rainford," and was keen to strengthen the midfield in preparation for next season.

Hayes said in last week's Citizen: "We've never replaced Dave Rainford. We need someone in there to boss things a little bit."

Rainford enjoyed a highly successful period with the Blues which included him being named Player of the Year in the 2004/05 season.
