WELL-WISHERS in Harlow have the chance to record a personal message to Nelson Mandela for his 90th birthday.

Harlow Council has set up a birthday book in the Civic Centre for members of the public and local groups to sign. It will then be sent to the former South African President as a gift from the town.

Mr Mandela's birthday is on July 18 and his name has links with the town.

One of Harlow’s main roads First Avenue was renamed First Avenue Mandela Avenue on Mr Mandela’s 65th birthday in 1983.

The sign was officially unveiled by Nelson Mandela’s eldest daughter, Zenani, her husband, Prince Dlamini, and Harlow councillors. On the day a petition to free Nelson Mandela was also signed by local councillors.

A display will accompany the book, which will be in the Civic Centre reception until 5pm on Friday.

The display and the book will also be at the Pamoja cultural awareness event in Broadwalk between noon and 4pm on Saturday (July 19).

Funny how people soon forget that this man implemented violent protest whilst he was the first head of MK (the military wing of ANC) and that the ANC was classified as a terrorist organization by the US and UK.
As far as I'm concerned he's no hero and the only things that can be attributed to him are violence and a long stretch inside -then, after everyone had forgotten the atrocities of the ANC, all of a sudden he's a hero and gullible town councils are naming streets after him.
I wonder if the "Pamoja cultural awareness event" had the balls to cover that part of Mr. Mandela's history? Or, as I suspect, they just pandered to political correctness instead of historical correctness.
